A ball of steel wool acts as a planet with it's own gravitational field. A much stronger gravitational field nearby from a star pulls material towards it through space. Magnetic ink simulates a field of comets or asteroids.

A ball of steel wool immersed in mineral oil simulates an asteroid in space. A paper curtain is deployed near it and particles are fired towards the curtain, blanketing the asteroid and sending it safely into a burning sun. In this case, a magnet takes the place of a star for obvious reasons.

Another way to push the curtain would be to use a continuous cord with Ferromagnetic fibers secured about the length of the thread.
